Washington National Opera names new director of its Domingo-Cafritz Program

From a press release:

Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced the appointment of Robert Ainsley as the Director of its Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program and the American Opera Initiative, effective next month. He comes to WNO from Minnesota Opera and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL); at both companies he has served as Head of Music Staff, Chorus Master, and Coach. At OTSL, he also led the annual audition tour to select the members of its young artist program. He has worked on many world premiere operas at both companies, including Terence Blanchard and Michael Cristofer’s Champion, which WNO presents during its 2016-2017 season.

Ainsley takes over for Michael Heaston, who has led the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program and the American Opera Initiative since January 2013. Heaston began his new position as the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program earlier this summer.
